What are we doing to our Earth's water?
We all know how terrible plastic bags are for the environment—they choke wildlife, they don't break down in landfills or in oceans, they add to our demand for oil, and they aren't easy to recycle, which is the biggest reason why 90 percent of plastic bags in the U.S. are not recycled.
We are dumping insurmountable amounts of plastic daily into our oceans. This is a major issue that has to be addressed on a worldwide level. It is evident that oil companies that produce petroleum based plastics are not going to take on this social responsibility.
Surely in the 21st century we can create something that's easy to produce and recycle. Petroleum based plastic is "not" biodegradable. Cellulose-based plastic from plant cellulose behaves just like plastic. Petroleum based plastic can be recycled, Europe is doing it. Why don't plastic companies collect the plastic and melt it down into new materials? We need to make it mandatory to recycle around the world and end using our oceans as a garbage patch for our trash.
What can we do about the current problem?
Make your pledge to Plastic Pollution Coalition.
Cellulose is readily available and obtainable from many plants, trees and different sources. It's applications can be the same as those of plastics and more. Biodegradable, lighter, more resistant for the same amount of materials used, it is cheaper to produce than plastics in equal amounts. Rolling papers from plant cellulose behaves just like plastic but burns like plastic.
What is being done?
Taxed, not banned
We must make a demand on those who put plastic in our lives to make the plastic we use much easier to recycle and not encourage its use and make it mandatory to recycle around the world. This could be funded by more affluent nations and, as they are cleaning up this mess jobs would be created. We need to be realistic and find new technology that will help us recycle/decompose plastic.
We cannot continue to have big business dictate what is to be done to our environment. Petroleum companies have proven that they cannot and will not accept this responsibility. Our leaders must not be influenced by some large corporations whose bottom line is a profit margin regardless of environmental sustainability and social well being.
Everyone on this planet can be made aware of the necessity of trash clean up. As humans we can all band together for the benefit of our world, not just for us, but for all of creation.
